Acre Forum and Book Signing
Every year, the Lowell Irish Cultural Committee hosts Irish Cultural Week in March, which includes the annual Acre Forum and Anam Cara Awards. “Anam Cara” is the Irish Gaelic phrase meaning “soul friend,” and the Committee honors individuals who, through their sharing of time, talents, and treasures, have helped preserve and protect the heritage and traditions of the Irish and the Acre Neighborhood, and a culture of giving back to the community.
Weather issues this past March required a postponement of the annual Acre Forum and Anam Cara, so the Committee cordially invites the Community to attend a “Halfway to St. Patrick’s Day,” celebration, at which time the honorees -- Mickey Finn (posthumous); Joyce Burgess; Jack McKenzie; and Fred Simon (posthumous) -- will receive their awards. The Acre Forum presentation will include musical performances by Irish Whispa; traditional Irish dance by the McGonagle Irish Dancers, and a presentation and book signing by local author David McKean for his latest book, "The Days That Went Before Us: stories & accounts of Lowell's early Irish." This book recounts the lives of the early Irish who settled in Lowell, in the first part of the 19th century, and the story of how a community of immigrants overcame adversity.
Join us for an evening of Irish music, storytelling, and step dancing. Free admission.
