Maureen (Shanahan) McNiff
“A Girl From God’s Country”
You know that when a Daughter is born on her Father’s Birthday, She has won his heart. So too, this Fantastic Woman has won the hearts of all those who know her! Is there any question that Maureen’s Heart is torn between so many loves? Her Husband Joseph, her son Joey, her Mother Marion, her family, ( not enough room on the page to list ), her Life of Teaching, her parish of St. Patrick?
The first girl born to Marion and Edmond Shanahan, Maureen grew up in (God’s Country) the heart of the Acre. It seems obvious that the influence of the sisters of Notre Dame had a great effect upon Maureen while attending St. Patrick’s Girls School. Unfortunately, fate played its hand, and after Maureen’s first year at St. Patrick’s Girls High School, it closed. Finishing her secondary education at Keith Hall, Maureen went on to complete her higher education at Rivier College, where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education .
Talk about commitment, Maureen spent forty years teaching fourth grade students within the Billerica School system. Service is a word that Maureen knows and lives well. She learned it at an early age, and has continued to live it throughout her life. “Ask, and it shell be done!” These are the only words that Maureen understands! A tireless benefactor of St. Patrick Parish, she has been committed to every Organization, Committee, and Function relating to our beloved church, over the past (several decades). It is hard to find a single function that has occurred within St. Patrick’s Parish over the past fifty years, that does not have Maureen’s signature upon it. If there was ever a “Go To Person” in “God’s Little Acre” then certainly, it is Maureen Shanahan McNiff.
The Parish of St. Patrick and all its people are truly blessed to have such a generous woman of God working in our behalf. In closing, we gratefully recognize the tireless efforts of Maureen to perpetuate Irish Culture both within St. Patrick Parish, and throughout the Greater Lowell Community.
At the same time, We are proud and privileged to honor the woman who gave birth to two of our distinguished “Irish Persons of the Year, alumni Thomas and Maureen. Mrs. Marion Shanahan lives the meaning of that old saying:
“The apples don’t fall far from the tree!”
Thank You, Mrs. Shanahan!
